Trick-or-treating Haloween Hell

Photobucket
Trick or treating is traditional in the USA but recently it has come here.

So children, the small ones accompanied by adults, wearing costumes, knock on your door, saying 'trick or treat'.

The "trick" is an (hopefully) idle threat to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property, such as Eggs and Flour being thrown at householders windows if no treat is given.

In the United States and Canada, trick-or-treating is now one of the main traditions of Halloween and it has become socially expected that if one lives in a neighborhood with children one should purchase treats in preparation for trick-or-treaters. The National Confectioners Association reported in 2005 that 80 percent of adults in the United States planned to give out confectionery to trick-or-treaters, and that 93 percent of children planned to go trick-or-treating.

When I was growing up I never heard of this happening, but one year, about 4 years ago, a few children knocked on my door, but I had no sweets in the house. What are you meant to do? Hide in the dark and hope they go away? I had some fruit in the house and that seemed to be acceptable. One year I bought some sweets, then no one came, and I ended up eating it all, which was not good for me. So now I just have apples, though I feel a bit like Scrooge.

Debrett's has posted its advice on its Web site. "Halloween fun should never feel menacing," it says. "Children should not be too greedy — if they are offered treats, make sure that they don't take too many and that they do say thank you." If you really don't want to be bothered by trick-or-treaters, it is perfectly acceptable to leave a bowl of treats at your doorsteps so children can help themselves.

The earliest known reference to ritual begging on Halloween in English speaking North America occurs in 1911, when a newspaper in Kingston, Ontario reported that it was normal for the smaller children to go street 'guising' on Halloween between 6 and 7 p.m., visiting shops and neighbors to be rewarded with nuts and candies for their rhymes and songs. Trick-or-treating does not seem to have become a widespread practice until the 1930s. Its reported in newspapers from the mid-1930s to the mid-1950s, typically saw it as a form of extortion, with reactions ranging from bemused indulgence to anger.

Before the 1980s, the North American phrase "trick-or-treat" was little known in the UK and when introduced was often regarded as an unusual and even unwelcome import, because "trick or treat" isn't a tradition, with Halloween an authentically ancient festival, about the links between life and death, the struggle between light and dark. It has now become more widespread, but is still often viewed as an exotic and unwelcome commercialised import, referred to as "the Japanese knotweed of festivals" and "Making demands with menaces".

Halloween is now a multi-million pound industry in the UK, with some retailers seeing 31 October emerging as the second most lucrative trading period of the year after Christmas (and overtaking Easter). Last year, sales of Halloween items, including costumes, themed food and drink, sweets and decorations, were expected to top £195m, rising from an estimated £12m in 2001. According to analysts, British Halloween spending is catching up with the US, where an average family spends approximately £65 on Halloween paraphernalia in a nationwide industry said to be worth £4.7 billion.

According to retailers in the UK and the US, Michael Jackson and the convicted Ponzi fraudster Bernard Madoff are among the most popular costume choices for 2009!

Greggs the baker invited a local coven of witches into its bakery in Manchester. Amethyst, Amber and Aquamarine blessed the recipes for a range of Halloween treats including bat biscuits, toffee apple lattices and creepy cupcakes before they were sent to 1,400 outlets across the UK. "We were delighted to be invited by Greggs to cast a positive blessing on the bakery and the goodies they're making," says Amethyst. "The traditional blessing we use brings protection and prosperity during an important and ancient British festival and it's great to think we're passing on some positivity to Greggs' customers around the country and at the same time dispelling some of the myths and stereotypes that surround our Craft."
Photobucket

People looked at Halloween and saw a festival that seemed ancient, pre-Christian and down-right pagan with its customs of dressing up, dancing around bonfires, making lanterns out of turnips (or pumpkins in the USA). They looked a bit further and saw a description in an old Irish tale of the festival of Samhain, meaning "the end of summer", which was celebrated on November 1. They put two and two together and it became accepted history that the origins of Halloween were in the Celtic feast of Samhain. The Catholic Church, under Pope Gregory III, moved All Saints' Day, a day to honour all the saints, from May 13 to November 1 in the 8th century.

Halloween is also traditionally connected to the Christian celebration of All Saints; a link that has largely been forgotten. The Bishop of Bolton, the Right Rev David Gillett wants to celebrate the saints who are the heroes of the Christian faith at Haloween.

World Vegan Day is 1 November

Tomorrow is World Vegan Day, an opportunity for vegans and their friends to celebrate and promote veganism. World Vegan Day is every year on November 1st (since 1994).

Vegan farming can help to overcome world hunger by helping Global Food Security; help protect our fertile lands and fresh water reserves, and cut greenhouse gas emissions. The Vegan Society are taking the message to food producers, decision makers and international development groups.

The Vegan Society recommends a highly varied diet including both cooked and raw foods as the proven basis for vegan health, particularly for infants. See Plant Based Nutrition and Health by Stephen Walsh. This and other books can be obtained from the Vegan Society, as can Liz Cook's useful and attractive nutrition wall chart.

Like any other form of diet, some vegan diets are more nutritionally complete than others. White bread, hydrogenated margarine and chips qualify as a vegan meal, but too many such meals will remove the usual benefit of a vegan diet in reducing risk of heart disease. Bananas are a healthful food in moderation, but anyone trying to live on bananas alone is headed for deficiency in about ten important nutrients.

The starting principle for health is to eat a wide variety of plant foods, including plenty of strongly coloured vegetables and fruits. Each food has different strengths, so the fewer foods you eat the less likely it is that all your needs will be met. Vegetables and fruits provide plenty of many vital vitamins and minerals along with a host of other beneficial plant chemicals. In general, the stronger the colour the better. Dark green leaves such as kale and spring greens leave white cabbage, iceberg lettuce and cucumber in the shade.

Over-processed foods that have lost much of their nutrient content or have been transformed into unnatural and harmful forms should be used sparingly, if at all. Hydrogenating vegetable oils is one of the worst forms of processing as it produces unnatural trans-fats which have an even worse effect than ordinary saturated fat in raising cholesterol and increasing heart disease risk. Hydrogenated fat is found in most fast foods, hard margarines, doughnuts and biscuits, and in some vegan sausages and burgers.

Post your events, and see how people are celebrating on our Events Page.

Breaking the monopoly of the professional politician - My idea for Power2010

Power2010's call for the public's idea for how we change politics has generated over 2000 ideas for widening democracy. They range from more traditional reformers' demands like fixed term parliaments and votes at 16, to the more unexpected and imaginative like a House of Lords made up of charitable representatives.

the OpenDemocracy blog .

A key part of this of course is having an open and intelligent debate on the kind of democracy we want - the very thing the political class is so keen to deny us. You can check out some of the different ideas on the Power2010 blog where a lively discussion is taking place. The deadline for submitting ideas is November 30th and before then I'm keen to sound out some fellow bloggers to hear their ideas and see if we can't provoke some good online debate and deliberation.’

So my ideas are:
1. End the whip. Even the name whip is a bit ridiculous, for most issues MPs should make up their own minds, otherwise you may as well only have 3 or so people in parliament.

2. Modern technology means MPs can follow debates and vote from anywhere, no need for them to be in the house on every occasion.

3. Lobbyists, vast corporations and the rich get more access to MPs than voters, redress the balance

4. Name and shame MPs who fail to communicate, my blog already reported on the lack of communication skills of MPs. It was based on a Hansard report using the latest figures (2007); on average they write 2 emails a week!

. 8% of MPs don't email
• 17% of MPs don't have a website
• 23% of MPs use social networking
• 11% of MPs blog

5. Many people live in Constituencies with a big majority, and they feel disenfranchised. Lets have proportional representation, where every vote counts.

Some others' ideas:
a chamber designed for 427 people is still being used for 646. It should be updated to seat all members. And let them have desks.

Jeering and heckling should be stopped in the chamber. It makes our politicians seem like children and is one of the things that turns members of the public off.

MPs should be able to address each other by name.

Susan Clarkson - Oxford Catholic Worker and peace activist, comes to Reading

Event this Saturday 31 Oct 10am to noon at RISC
Title : Faith and Resistance

Susan Clarkson from the Oxford Catholic Worker communnity will speak.

She has recently been in prison for her action of entering Northwood command centre and some of you will know her as she is a regular protester in front of Raf? USAF! bases.

Sentenced to 21 days in prison Ms Clarkson said in court that her “actions were both for the victims in Afghanistan and the young soldiers sent there” and that she did not want to pay the fine because it some of it would go to the military. The Magistrates were sympathetic but said they had to follow the rules.

Together with other Catholic Workers, Ms Clarkson was arrested on December 28th 2007 after putting red paint to symbolize the blood of the victims on the sign outside the HQ. A year later on December 29th 2008, she was arrested after entering the base to pray. December 28th is the Christian Feast of the Holy Innocents.

In my opinion any changes will disrupt and annoy customers. Reading Buses should be clearer in which services are actually being cut, most bus users wont have seen their consultation before they find the service has changed. I expect many annoyed commuters will be very unhappy with this.

Also it was announced on the 22nd October, with a finish date on 4 November! With a postal strike on some people wont get their comments in on time. I cant see any mention of it on the www.reading.gov.uk website. They changes the service only a few months ago in August

A couple of weeks ago the council finally noticed that the bio ethanol buses were not as green as they had been saying, and with the cost going up have abandoned them, at great cost to us.

Comedian Jimmy Carr In Joke Shock

Comedian Jimmy Carr has incited the rage of many including MPs over a joke about wounded soldiers.

Audible gasps could be heard [at the Manchester Apollo on Friday night] when Carr quipped: “Say what you like about the servicemen amputees from Iraq and Afghanistan, we are going to have a f**king good Paralympics team in 2012.”

Lib-Dem Nick Harvey exclaimed: “Most people will think it in completely poor taste to try to extract humour from what are catastrophes.”

Tory MP Patrick Mercer added: ‘This was a remarkably dim and foolish thing to joke about. It’s not funny and this man’s career should end right now.'

Don't MPS have some important work to do, or are they desperate to stop us talking about their expenses.

It may seem poor taste to some but shock is in the nature of Jimmy Carr act, if you don’t like offensive gags, don’t watch him.

In a statement, Carr said: ‘I’ve got nothing but respect for the young men and women who put their lives on the line for this country. I’ve visited Selly Oak and Headley Court on many occasions. ‘I’m sorry if anyone was offended but that’s the kind of comedy I do. If a silly joke draws attention to the plight of these servicemen then so much the better. My intention was only to make people laugh.’

When Carr visited Headley Court earlier this year, he said it ‘really made him think’ about those injured in the line of duty.

British Forces Foundation director Mark Cann said at the time: ‘Jimmy was very funny, and the patients and staff alike thoroughly enjoyed his company.’

And at Selly Oak, Major Ian Cheesman told the comic: ‘It is not easy to meet personnel who have been seriously injured and whise lives have been dramatically changed, but your comfortable banter and obvious empathy proved to be a huge boost to both patients and their families.

He may even have picked the joke up on a visit to the guys there in rehab. The local media did a piece about the Paralympic training team going to Headley Court and other placers to give the Ex-soldiers/airmen some guidance on fitness for the future with a view to 2012/2016. So as distastful as it may seem to some, I suspect he's more guided and informed than most.

What is really offensive it sending soldiers over there in the first place and then not looking after them properly when they get back. And quite a few disabled service personnel do go into competitive sport. To say so hardly insults them.

Army Rumour Service debates this in a colourful way.

The audience will also be able to view and interact with other humanoid robots from BBC programmes including; the rare opportunity to be exterminated by a Dalek and the chance to meet Sidewider, another humanoid TV star. To top it off, there will be the opportunity to be ringside for our grand ‘robotic boxer’ spa. Standing at 6ft tall, weighing over 100kg and made from solid steel you wouldn’t want to get in the way of their pneumatically powered punch!

The Reading Robot Club will also be attending the event, demonstrating and fighting Ant-weight robots. These little robots weigh in at just 150 grammes and are a great way to get into the sport. My nephew loves them.

Question Time Becomes bnpQT

They say more than eight million people watched BNP leader Nick Griffin's appearance on the BBC's Question Time last night!

It was three times the usual audience for the programme, which was recorded despite protests by hundreds of anti-fascist demonstrators outside BBC Television Centre in west London.

Perhaps the BBC are happy, they have given the bnp more publicity than they could possibly dream of, they described it as a Christmas present.

As expected the whole show turned into a discussion of the bnp, so lets forget anything else that has happened this week. The cheeky one who had happily shared a platform with the KKK even complains about Question Time "lynch mob".

The other panelists tried hard to attack him, but aside from Bonnie Greer didn't distinguish themselves. Bonnie showed the bnps understanding of history to be quite wrong. Aside from the odd point, Baroness Warsi and Chris Huhne may as well not have been there. Jack Straw failed to answer questions, he had a miserable time, particularly on immigration & Iraq. The audience did much better, asking some penetrating questions that Griffin couldn't answer, but as they were all hostile it will play up to the bnp line of them being 'victims'.

Griffins Boobs
1 Father Justice: Griffin was challenged about his Nazi sympathies, he said that father was in the RAF and Jack Straw's father was prison for refusing to fight. Are we to be judged only on our fathers now, how very peculiar. What about judging people on their own actions?

2 Homophobic: Griffin said that the sight of two men kissing is ‘creepy’, an audience member said "As a homosexual I can tell you Mr Griffin that the feeling's mutual,".

3 KKK: “I shared a platform with a non violent member of the KKK.” The audience laughed.

4 "Guided tours in the Lake District have been cancelled because only English people, white people, were going on them." A Lake District National Park spokesperson said tours had never been cancelled.

5 "I can't explain why I used to say those things, any more than I can tell you why I've changed my mind, I can't tell you the extent to which I changed my mind, because European law prevents this." No, not in this country.

6 He claimed there were many untrue quotes, but he wouldn't say which ones. He was laughed at.

7 British Aborigines; there is no such thing; as Bonnie Greer points out. In Roman times there were Africans and Asians here.

Unfortunately to those who sympathise with the bnp. QT will only encourage them, they saw their man being attacked and responding. That he said some nonsense won't worry them, if they were logical people they wouldn't be supporters in the first place.

The beeb said that 243 viewers had complained that the programme was biased against Mr Griffin and 114 had complained about the decision to invite him. It had also received 59 messages of congratulations from viewers.

Photocard Driving Licence Fiasco

Thousands of motorists risk being fined up to £1,000 because they are unwittingly driving without a valid licence.

Most drivers believed that because the paper license doesn't expire till your 70, the photocard would be the same.

They have failed to spot that their photocard licence automatically expires after ten years and has to be renewed. They blame the Government for this fiasco.

Drivers have to pay £17.50 to renew their card, which will earn the Treasury an estimated £437million over 25 years.

The first batch of ten-year photo licences was issued in July 1998, and the confusion has come to light as they start to expire.

DVLA figures reveal that while 16,136 expired this summer, so far only 11,566 drivers have renewed, leaving 4,570 outstanding.

With another 300,000 photocard licences due to expire over the coming year, the number of invalid licences could soar. A total of 25million have been issued.

At the heart of the confusion is the very small print on the credit card-size photo licence. Just below the driver's name is a numbered series of dates and details. Number '4b' features a date in tiny writing but the significance is explained only if the driver turns over the card and reads the key on the back which states that '4b' means 'licence valid to'.

Even more confusingly, a table on the rear of the card sets out how long the driver is registered to hold a licence - that is until their 70th birthday.

Motorists who fail to renew their licences in time are allowed to continue driving but the DVLA says they could be charged with 'failing to surrender their licence', an offence carrying a £1,000 fine.

The DVLA said yesterday that the date of expiry was carried on the new-style licences, but was unable to say whether motorists were told the licences would expire when they were first issued.
A spokesman said: 'It is important that photocards are updated every ten years to ensure the police and other enforcement agencies can identify whether a driving licence is being used fraudulently.'

The agency is sending reminders to drivers whose photocard is due to expire, and no one has so far been charged with failing to surrender their licence.

The Association of British Insurers and the Department for Transport said that insurance cover was not affected if drivers failed to update their photocard.

Five in court for stopping nuclear proliferation at Aldermaston

Guest Post by Dan Viesnik

Five in court for stopping nuclear proliferation at Aldermaston while Obama gets Nobel peace prize for calling for disarmament

Trial at Reading Magistrates´ Court, Berkshire on Wednesday, 21st October and Thursday 22nd October 2009

While Barack Obama is being congratulated for receiving the Nobel peace prize, partly for his commitment to `a world without nuclear weapons´, five people who protested at the gates of Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) Aldermaston, where the renewal of Britain´s nuclear weapons is being planned, will be on trial for exactly the same commitment.

Renate Zauner from Switzerland, Barbara Dowling and Jean Douglas from Scotland, and Emma Sangster and David Polden from London will be on trial at Reading Magistrates´ Court on
October 21st and 22nd.

On 27 October 2008, the five defendants lay down at one of the entrances to AWE Aldermaston, successfully preventing workers and contractors driving into the base, where Britain's nuclear warheads are developed and maintained. It took the police more than an hour to remove and arrest the blockaders.

The defendants believe that the ongoing activities at, and expansion of, AWE Aldermaston and nearby AWE Burghfield, together with the ongoing deployment and planned renewal of Britain´s submarine-launched Trident nuclear missile system, contravene Britain´s obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

They also believe that Britain´s Trident nuclear missile system violates the 1996 landmark ruling of the International Court of Justice regarding the Legality of the Threat or Use of Nuclear Weapons, which could find no lawful use for these weapons of mass destruction.

They further argue against the massive cost of replacing and maintaining Trident, particularly in the current economic climate. On 9 September this year, during the parliamentary recess, Quentin Davies, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary, Ministry of Defence, quietly announced that an extra £1 billion per year of taxpayers´ money would be given to AWE Aldermaston.

The defendants have submitted to the court a report by expert Dr. Nick Ritchie, from the University of Bradford, to underpin their claims.

On 24 September 2009, President Obama chaired an historic meeting of the UN Security Council
which affirmed its commitment to the goal of a world free of nuclear weapons and established a broad framework for reducing global nuclear dangers. The Security Council passed a new UN resolution strenghtening the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty.

Commenting before the trial, Renate Zauner said, "My grandfather was mayor of his hamlet during
the Second World War. He never broke a single national law. At the end of the war, six million people had died in the Holocaust. He might not have realised the consequences of his actions at the time, but I do: if I simply watch while crimes against humanity and war crimes are being prepared at Aldermaston and don´t act, then I am co-responsible for the preparation of these crimes and for the possible deaths of millions of people."

Emma Sangster added, "A poll taken in July this year showed that the majority of people in Britain want all of this country´s nuclear weapons scrapped, rather than see Trident be replaced. Despite all the concern about nuclear proliferation and talk of a nuclear-free world, this Government is developing a new generation of nuclear weapons. I believe we all must do what we can to stop this process."

Electric Motorbikes

Photobucket

Electric Motorbikes have improved in the last few years.

Scooters; The Electricycle city 5.oL+ has a 5,000W engine and 60V 60AH Lithium-ion Batteries, you can reach a top speed of 60 miles/hr and keep going for an amazing 85 miles on a single charge!
You can carry a passenger on back and attach any standard carry box, to help carry your load. There is space under the seat to fit most helmets and with its roller mechanism, getting it onto its back stand is a easy. It can be classified as a 50cc moped, allowing it to be ridden with a regular driver’s license. For those who want to take advantage of speeds of up to 60 miles/hr, an unrestricted version, 125cc moped, is available. Its £3,995.

The vectrix does 62 mph, acceleration 0-50 mph 6.8 seconds, the range is 68 miles @ 25 mph. Its loudest noise is the high-pitched hum as it speeds up and the whirring from its special regenerative braking, which can recharge the battery and increase the bike's range.

Neal Saiki invented the Zero S Supermoto, the electric motorbike can go from 0-60mph in around five seconds, and can be recharged from a normal domestic plug point. Around £8,000 in the UK and a maximum range of 60 miles per charge. They claim that "less than an eighth of the CO2 pollution per mile at the power plant than a petrol-powered motorcycle."

Honda is investigating electric motorcycle technology with plans to launch its first such machine before 2011, an electric Cub. I want one of those, I used to have a cub, I took it to France.

If your up to a bit of DIY, theres the Vespa e conversion kit, get an old petrol one and electrify it.

The Mission One will hit 150mph and has an average operating range of around 150 miles. Power comes from a liquid-cooled, three-phase AC induction motor that puts out 100lb-ft of torque via a single-speed transmission. Its £47,178 unfortunately.

Brammo Enertia 60+ MPH range 42 miles
The Enertia is partly made from recycled materials, the powercycle itself can be recycled at the end of its primary life. A 520 mile trip will only cost an estimated $4 in electricity, made in the USA it costs $12,000 (£7,000 approx).

UKIP and the BNP

This year UKIP doubled its policies, from just the one to a total of two. Now in addition to just 'blame the EU for everything' they now also 'blame migrants' too. They have strayed into bnp territory, and must hope to pick up some of their supporters.

This week some ex army leaders criticised extremist parties for using WW2 images. The media associated this with the bnp, but again UKIP were there too.

The irony of course was that it was a war against fascism, ukip and the bnp would closer to Oswald Mosley, who had been a Tory, then Labour, then formed British Union of Fascists. It claimed membership as high as 50,000, and had the Daily Mail and Daily Mirror among its earliest supporters! He was interned during WW2.

Fighting alongside us were Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Gurkhas, USA, USSR, free Poles and others. I suspect that bnp and ukip would like to forget about the Poles, Indians, Gurkhas, Caribbean troops etc .

Today in the European Parliament we had the rather distasteful sight of UKIP and the bnp representatives united together to attack the idea of tackling climate change.

Nick Griffin described the whole thing as 'an elite scam' and then Godfrey Bloom (UKIP) backed him up saying 'the whole thing is a sham... a bogus hypothesis'. You can watch the edited highlights here.

As Will Straw says;
"The BNP claim on their website to be, “this nation’s only true Green party which has policies that will actually save the environment.”And while consistency was never their strong point (see, for example, this picture of Griffin standing in front a No. 303 Polish Squadron spitfire), their own environment policy appears to contradict Griffin’s views on renewables: "A BNP government will… develop renewable energy sources such as off-shore wind farms, wave, tidal and solar energy.”

Tory MEP Sajjad Karim responded with;
"These two parties crave acceptance into the political mainstream, but their cloud cuckoo land views are repeatedly being exposed. I would like to think that after such ridiculous views have been aired in such a public environment that the public will see through their carefully crafted public image and consign them to the looney fringes where they belong."

Home Security Tips

Windows that can be reached from someone standing outside are a potential way in for intruders. If your windows slide, there’s a very simple, cheap way to secure those windows against being pried open.

Take a dowel stick that’s thin enough to fit into the track of the window – you’ll find them for under £1 at a hardware store. The square shaped ones are great, but round is fine, too. Cut it down with a small handsaw or so that it fits inside the track. You can make it exactly the length of the track, or make it a few inches shorter: not enough for a person to squeeze through, but enough to leave it open for ventilation when you go to bed or are out.

Now if an intruder pops off the screen and starts prying at the window, it’ll stop dead at the dowel stick no matter how hard they pull.

Combine this with the Door Jammer, and you’ve increased the security of your home for about £15.

10:10 Opposition Day debate in Parliament on Wednesday

http://www.38degrees.org.uk/page/speakout/1010parliament have a campaign to reduce emissions, so contact your MP. I have put my letter below.

If you don't know your MP, they have a handy postcode finder which ill tell you who it is. Now get clicking.

Dear MP,

I hear that there's going to be a debate this Wednesday about the 10:10 campaign. It will propose signing Parliament up to the 10:10 campaign and call on the government to achieve 10% reduction in public sector emissions by the end of 2010. I have signed up for this, and am cutting my emissions.

Please vote for the motion this Wednesday. It will send a powerful signal to the government to take action to cut emissions. It will also send helpful ripples internationally in the build-up Copenhagen climate summit in December.

Please confirm that you'll attend the debate and vote for the motion, or if not please explain to me why not.

Thank you.

Yours Sincerely

More than 1,000 demonstrators converged on the Ratcliffe-on-Soar site - one of Britain's biggest coal-fired power generators - with clashes breaking out. Police used dogs to try and prevent climate protesters taking down fences. Some activists were arrested, while others were bitten by police dogs and suffered other injuries.

One protester, Laura McFarlane-Shopes, said: "We were near the fence and some people were trying to get over. I was just in front of them. Horses and dogs started charging down. Police shouted that they were coming. They let the dogs on to me and one leaped up and bit my arm."

Photobucket

Some of the media are focusing on a policeman who was injured. The Camp for Climate Action issued a statement wishing the officer who sustained head injuries a "speedy recovery". The group said it had no details about the incident, adding: "The Camp for Climate Action is at Ratcliffe to confront the causes of climate change, not get into conflict with the police."
There is a video interview with a witness, who says the policeman had a fit, a medic from the protesters went to help the policeman, and that the other protesters stepped away from them. The police took the oppertunity to kettle the protesters in a violent way. This can be seen on the climatecamp.tv website, click on police office collapses.

Many will recall that on previous occasions, such as the summers G20, how the media can get the wrong impression and get carried away. Lets wait and see what this is about, patience is called for.

The 2,000MW coal-fired power station is owned by the energy company E.ON and is said to be one of the largest producers of carbon dioxide in Britain. Some protesters carried banners and cardboard gravestones bearing the words 'RIP E.ON' and 'RIP Ratcliffe'.

This youtube clip has an interview with local Green Party Cllr Richard Mallender about why he is protesting. we have all got to stand up. with Cllr Sue Mallender.

Biofuel Power Station Sheffield Objection

I have just sent an email alert from Biofuelwatch's website to Sheffield City Council Planning Department asking them to not approve an application by company Rocpower Ltd for a biofuel powered electricity generating plant. This would open up a whole new market for biofuels and must be stopped!

Please support this urgent action. To find out more, please click here to go to the webpage : http://www.biofuelwatch.org.uk/rocpoweroct2009.php

Objection to Rocpower Ltd’s application for a Biofuel Power Generation Plant at Ecclesfield, Ref 09/02979/FUL I wish to object to Rocpower Ltd’s planning application to build an 8 MW biofuel power station at Loicher Lane, Ecclesfield, which would burn 10,000 tonnes of vegetable oil every year.

I am deeply concerned about the impact of biofuels such as palm oil on the climate, on rainforests and other ecosystems and on communities in the global South. In Italy and Germany, a large number of biofuel power stations are already operating and virtually all of them run on palm oil which is by far the cheapest vegetable oil. If the power station were run on palm oil only, it would require about 4,000 hectares of plantations to produce its fuel every year – and even more if other types of fuel were used.

According to the UN, palm oil is the main cause of deforestation in Indonesia and Malaysia. It is responsible for billions of tonnes of carbon emissions, as forests are destroyed and peatlands converted to plantations. In countries like Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Colombia, growing numbers of indigenous peoples, small farmers and other rural communities are being forced off their land, often through violence to make way for new oil palm plantations.

I am also concerned about the impacts of the proposed biofuel power station on air quality and thus on the health of the local population, particularly in Ecclesfield but potentially also in surrounding districts. The site for the power station in Loicher Lane is within the City’s urban area designated in 2006 as an Air Quality Management Area. The Council has a responsibility to prepare and implement remedial action plans to control and reduce air pollution in the AQMA. The Rocpower power station will worsen PM10 levels, as well as those of nitrogen oxide and PM 2.5, and will therefore make it more difficult for the Council to meet its responsibility to improve air quality.

Sheffield City Council must consider the climate and wider sustainability impacts of planning decisions and I believe that this means that the development should be rejected. I also request that the plans are considered by the relevant planning committee and not as a delegated decision. Best regards,

Climate Swoop At Ratcliffe-on-Soar

climatecamp.tv

Climate Swoop At Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station.

In the past the annual Climate Camp has taken place alongside a mass direct action against a particular target (Drax, Heathrow and Kingsnorth). This year, climate activists prepare to shut down Ratcliffe-On-Soar after celebrating the demise of plans for a new coal power plant at Kingsnorth.

E.ON blamed the global recession and the fall in demand for electricity for its plans to 'defer an investment decision on the Kingsnorth proposals for up to two to three years'. In a recession the demand for power goes down, but the industry usually talks of a shortage of power in the future, so this seems an odd excuse.

Caroline Lucas MEP (and prospective Green Party MP for Brighton) called it a 'victory for those who have taken to the streets in the fight against climate change'.

'Kingsnorth has been nothing short of a PR disaster for the UK Government – and for E.ON, which has tried in vain, via an expensive marketing campaign, to convince the world that it is genuinely committed to a cleaner, more sustainable future,' she said.

This weekend (17th & 18th October 2009) the campers get together to try and close one of the UK's biggest coal fired power stations, E.ON's Ratcliffe-on-Soar in Nottingham.

Greens on Trial Newsnight

Wath Wednesday’s ‘Greens on Trial’ Newsnight special
20 mins in, to 32 mins.

Its very good, Caroline Lucas MEP, Zac Goldsmith and from John Sauven, UK Executive Director, Greenpeace were largely in agreement. Shame the other Tories don't agree, they have few plans for reducing carbon.

The presenter tries very hard to make some controversy with GM and nuclear. Would have been better to have had a different Tory, Zac seems to be the Green wing of his party.

Then Justin Rowlat does an 'ethical man' piece.

Later Franny Armstrong from 10:10 and Age Of Stupid did very well. Solitaire Townsend PR company www.futerra.co.uk.

Rather than have just one show like this; it should be a regular feature. What is the government doing to reduce emissions; nothing. For years Labour have been pretending that things are happening, and the Tory/LD parliamentary opposition hasnt been questioning this complacency. We need some Greens in Parliament, and Caroline Lucas is just the person to do it.

24th October International Day Of Action

Photobucket

On October 24th, Greenpeace and 350.org with a broad coalition of groups will participate in an international day of action. Events are already planned in over 100 countries around the world. Some are big, some are small; but every single one of them is absolutely necessary. Including yours…

Join the rest of the world on October 24th by hosting or attending an event in your community!

Science clearly tells us that only dramatic action can prevent global warming and its catastrophic impacts -- and the world is looking to President Obama to lead the way. Scientists say that if industrialized countries like the US reduce their global warming pollution by 25-40% (below 1990 levels) in the next decade, we may still be able to pass on a safe climate to our children. But time is running out.

350 is the number that leading scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide—measured in "Parts Per Million" in our atmosphere. 350 PPM—it's the number humanity needs to get back to as soon as possible to avoid runaway climate change.

The President of the Maldives, for example, is holding an underwater protest.

In Oxford theres a march starting at 11am, with entertainment

Aldershot, Hampshire are having a Bricks and Bread Sustainable Living Centre co2 awareness day - Event to help people understand about co2 with demonstrations of easy ways to reduce carbon emissions.

Greenpeace Rooftop Protest Of Parliament

Thirty-one Greenpeace volunteers are still on the roof of Parliament as MPs arrived for their first day back after the summer break. 24 came down last night and were arrested and all have been bailed to return.

They occupyied the roof to call for a new style of politics in Britain, one capable of rising to meet the challenge of climate change. More people are handing out copies of their climate manifesto on the street which outlines the 12 simple steps the UK can take to save the climate.

We've got less than two months until the global summit on climate change and so far bold action has been trumped by short term interests. It's our generation that must take charge and save our climate. And we can, but the clock is ticking.

If you haven't already, please send a letter to your MP today and ask them to commit to the 12 policies the've outlined that are needed to save the climate and the planet.
greenpeace
http://twitter.com/greenpeaceuk

You can also watch a video featuring a few of the volunteers on the roof to find out more and read all the updates on our site.

The 12 Policies:
Zero carbon. Guarantee that emissions from the UK power sector will be near zero by 2030, as recommended by the UK government's Committee on Climate Change.

Cut coal. Immediately rule out all emissions from new coal-fired power stations, preventing any new unabated or partially abated coal plants.

Cut emissions 42% by 2020. Commit Britain to meeting the bolder emissions target recommended by the Committee on Climate Change.

Insulate Britain. Drastically cut energy wastage by retrofitting all existing buildings and ensuring all new buildings meet zero-emission standards.

Fair financing. Commit to help pay for low carbon development in developing countries, to stop deforestation and to protect the world’s poorest people from the impacts of climate change.

Repower Britain. Commit to ensuring that at least 15% of the UK’s total energy (including heat, electricity and transport) comes from renewables by 2020.

Rewire Britain. Ensure that the electricity grid is upgraded to harness wind power and build smart local grids to improve communities’ ability to generate their own clean energy.

Curb aviation. Stop all airport expansion, including Heathrow’s proposed third runway.

Invest in Britain. Properly fund reseach and development, develop new training programmes and support the manufacturing supply chain to help Britain compete in the global low carbon economy.

Bank on green. Set up a green infrastructure bank that would lend to major low carbon projects and harness the expertise of the financial sector.

Issue green bonds. Give investors and savers a secure new way to help fund green projects through government backed bonds.

Reform taxation. Refocus taxation onto pollution so that it can support new green industries and drive down emissions while strengthening the UK’s finances

Dalai Lama Supports The Green Party

Dalai Lama Supports Green Party on this clip

Photobucket

Two minutes twenty into the clip, he says 'if you have a Green Party, I want to join'.

If the planet is to be sustained, environmental education and personal responsibility will be the key, said His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama in a lecture last year.
“Taking care of our planet environment is like taking care of our own home,” he said. “We have a responsibility to take care of the environment. It is our only home.”

In his 75-minute address, he raised environmental concerns across themes as varied as religious tolerance, consumerism and income disparity. He connected the topics by emphasizing how the promotion of human values and religious harmony is needed in order to take care of humanity’s “inner environments.”

“Even if the environment – the external surroundings – are peaceful and beautiful, unless inner environment is not fully taken care of, the external will not bring inner peace,” he said.

In response to a question from a student about how to maintain hope amid the mounting environmental challenges, His Holiness said the answer partially resides in increased awareness through education, especially of children. “From kindergarten, the concept of a dialogue about taking care of the environment should be part of their life through education,” he said.
That concept of lifelong learning extends into adulthood and applies to political awareness as well. “If you have a Green Party ( in this country ), I want to join,” he said to applause.
“This taking care of the environment should be part of our daily life,” he said, adding that it can and should start small. He conserves water by only showering and turning off lights when leaving a room. “Even in small ways, make a contribution,” he said. “If we take care, things can change.”

He recalled how his own environmental awakening occurred, spurred on by ecological issues in Tibet, concerns about global warming and discussions with experts and scientists. “Then I realize the environment issue is so important,” he said.

Kingsnorth has been put to ground

The decision by E.ON to suspend its plans to build a new coal fired power station at Kingsnorth is a real triumph for everyone who has fought so hard to oppose this dangerous facility.

The advocates of Kingsnorth claimed that it would have produced 'clean coal'. However, carbon capture and storage technology is still in an experimental phase. Moreover, the long-term effects of pumping carbon dioxide into storage caverns under the North Sea are unknown. Instead of prioritising carbon capture and storage, the government should urgently initiate major investment in energy efficiency, renewables, decentralised energy and demand-reduction schemes. If it is to make any real progress at the Copenhagen climate summit, Britain cannot go along with a "do as we say, not as we do" message.

E.ON claims that the cancellation of Kingsnorth is a response to a drop in demand for electricity. Which is odd as we keep being told that there will be a shortfall leading to power cuts if we don't do something about it.

It makes it even clearer that what we need is to introduce a nationwide programme of energy-efficiency. According to the government's own figures, we could achieve a 30% reduction in energy use in the UK through existing efficiency technologies alone. What energy we do
produce needs to be far cleaner. The UK is ideally positioned for a green energy revolution - all we need is the political will to realise it.
said Dr Caroline Lucas MEP, who has been consistently campaigning on this issue.

Britain has the potential to show real political leadership here. As NASA scientist and climatologist James Hansen, who testified against the proposed Kingsnorth facility, has argued, the best thing now for coal is for it to be left in the ground.

Taxpayers' Alliance director doesn't pay British tax

I have always wondered about the tax payers alliance, who or what is behind them. It sounds like a great idea for people who want to pay less tax, but it has been revealed to be much more sinister.

For a start; Alexander Heath, a director of the increasingly influential rightwing lobby group, lives in a farmhouse in the Loire and has not paid British tax for years.

But more worrying than this, its revealed that rather than a grassroots organisation of ordinary citizens; its the wealthy who are backing it, many of whom have links to the Tories. Sir Anthony Bamford, the owner of the JCB digger company, and Tony Gallagher, the owner of Gallagher Estates, both Conservative donors, who with 32 other businessmen have donated about £80,000 to the group through the Midlands Industrial Council.

The campaign group refuses to publish details of its income or a list of donors, but said the biggest single donation was no higher than £100,000 and its annual income from donations was about £1m.

Their links to the Conservatives include monthly meetings where speakers have included Eric Pickles, the Conservative party chairman, Liam Fox, the shadow defence secretary, and Daniel Hannan MEP.

Not everything the TPA says is wrong though. Who could disagree with its commitment to "criticise all examples of wasteful and unnecessary spending", or to putting 2012 London Olympic spending under scrutiny? But the Alliance's concern for better public spending is a stepping stone to its desire for less public spending. And far from being a voice for "ordinary" taxpayers, its policies – opposing all tax rises (what, for everyone, in any circumstance?) and backing a flat rather than progressive tax – will increase inequality and shift wealth from poor to rich. Much of out tax goes on vital public services; schools, hospitals, transport, army, police and much more; and that costs money.

There is room for cuts though; i.d. cards, nuclear weapons (and power), subsidy for arms traders, expanding motorways and building more runways. But rather than use savings to reduce the tax burden, I want the money used to prepare us for the future, to change to a low carbon life.

Michael Moore new film Capitalism: a love story

Michael Moore the award winning film maker behind 'Bowling for Colombine' and Fahrenheit 9/11 has made a new movie; 'Capitalism: a love story'.

It features Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur “I mean some of them are criminals,” she says of the bankers and financiers who benefited “I think some of them belong in jail.”

Huffington Post says:"Michael Moore has made the most important and urgent political film of our time. In fact, he might have made the most American of films since the populist cinema of Frank Capra." I hope it gets a UK release soon.

You can see the trailer and an interesting debate with right wing presenter Sean Hannity

Last year he put a free movie on the Internet, Slacker Uprising. Two million people saw it on its first three days! Unfortunately its only free to people residing in the United States or Canada.

The film, intended by Moore “to bring out millions of young and new voters on November 4th.”, covers his tour just prior to the 2004 US Presidential election, rallying to protest against President Bush. It covers a 42 day tour, over 60+ cities, and the obstacles put in place by Republicans.

Michaels website has a letter 'Congratulations President Obama on winning the Nobel Peace Prize! You have filled the world with hope -- now you must make peace happen.' Well said.

More Green Apple

iPod and MacBook users can now claim one less guilt trip: Apple Computer has become the latest high-profile defection from the US Chamber of Commerce; a result of the group's opposition to curbing greenhouse gas pollution.

In a letter dated today, communicating the company's immediate resignation, Catherine A. Novelli, the vice-president of worldwide government affairs at Apple wrote, "We strongly object to the chamber's recent comments opposing the E.P.A.'s effort to limit greenhouse gases."

The US Chamber of Commerce, one of that nation's most powerful business lobbies, has steadfastly opposed curbs on greenhouse gas pollution, via either a cap-and-trade market or mandates under the Clean Air Act.

In late August, the Chamber demanded that the Environmental Protection Agency justify its finding that excessive, human-created CO2 represented a danger to human health and the environment. William Kovacs, the chamber's senior vice president for environment, technology and regulatory affairs, told the Los Angeles Times this hearing would be "the Scopes monkey trial of the 21st century...It would be evolution versus creationism. It would be the science of climate change on trial."

In recent weeks, the major utilities Exelon, PGE and PNM Resources have left the Chamber over its climate obstructionism; Nike resigned its position on the Chamber's board on Sept. 30, but remains a member, it says, to advocate from within for strong action on global warming.

Phone Boxes May One Day Charge Electric Cars

As mobile phones become widespread so the need for telephone boxes dwindles, but resourceful town planners in Madrid have found a new use for them as re-charging points for electric vehicles. Phone box sites relatively easy to adapt as recharging points because they tend to be located close to the roadside and already have their own electricity supply. A trial will see 30 telephone boxes around the city transformed into charging points as part of a network of 546 state-subsidised recharging points, which will also cover Seville and Barcelona.

The Spanish government plans to spend the equivalent of £8.7m on encouraging the use of at least 2,000 electric cars in the three cities over the next two years

Passwords Posted On Line

An anonymous personr posted details of thousands of accounts on October 1 at pastebin.com, a site commonly used by developers to share code. The details have since been removed, the accounts are genuine and most appear to be based in Europe. The list details over 10,000 accounts starting from A through to B, suggesting there could be additional lists.

Currently it appears only accounts used to access Microsoft's Windows Live Hotmail have been posted, this includes @hotmail.com, @msn.com and @live.com accounts.

According to a Microsoft spokesperson "over the weekend Microsoft learned that several thousand Windows Live Hotmail customer's credentials were exposed on a third-party site due to a likely phishing scheme. Upon learning of the issue, we immediately requested that the credentials be removed and launched an investigation to determine the impact to customers. As part of that investigation, we determined that this was not a breach of internal Microsoft data and initiated our standard process of working to help customers regain control of their accounts."

It is recommended that users change their passwords.

A researcher who examined 10,000 Hotmail, MSN and Live.com passwords that were recently exposed online has published an analysis of the list and found that “123456″ was the most commonly used password, appearing 64 times.

Forty-two percent of the passwords used lowercase letters from “a to z”; only 6 percent mixed alpha-numeric and other characters. Around 40% of people use the same password for every website they use.

Migration myths dispelled in UNDP report

Our media has an anti immigrant agenda, capitalised on by UKIP/BNP. I always thought it was quite against the tolerant traditions of this country, where so many waves of immigrants have settled here over so many years. Like many people in England, my ancestors are immigrants. Actually if you go back far enough everyone had to immigrate here.

The report from the UN Development Programme (UNDP) found that most migrants do not move from developing to developed countries, and when they do, rather than hurting host economies, they benefit them.

The UNDP's Human Development Report 2009, launched globally on 5 October in Bangkok, dispels several myths about migration, instead underlining the economic and social benefits for countries.

"Mobility can bring large gains in development," Jeni Klugman, director of the report said. "It's presently very much constrained by a whole range of barriers, and reform [of] these barriers could allow much greater potential to be released."

The annual report calls for several migration reforms, including for states to ensure basic rights for migrants, and the mainstreaming of migration into national development plans.

Dame Ellen MacArthur The Green Campaigner

Photobucket

After writing about a Green British rower, here is a Green British Sailor.

Dame Ellen MacArthur is retiring from competitive sailing to concentrate on environmental campaigns. Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, Dame Ellen, who broke the speed record for solo circumnavigation of the globe in 2005, said a trip to the Atlantic island of South Georgia had made her acutely aware of the challenges facing the planet.

"The more I researched into it, the more frightened I got  and that has really scared me to the point that I can't go back to sea and go around the world again because this really matters," she said.

Dame Ellen MacArthur
Why are you interested in sustainability?
"One big challenge which I'm really driving forward, overlaid on all our projects, is one of trying to figure out how to live and work in a more sustainable way.

The winter before last I was given the chance to spend some time in Antarctica and it was just incredible. Visiting such a remarkable place made me stop and take in what was around me and reflect on my experiences and all that I have seen in a decade of life on the ocean. It was a stark reminder to me of just how important such wild and virtually untouched places are and how we need to look after them to ensure that they survive in the future. It also made me realise how vastly different life is there compared to life back home in our heavily consumerist society.

I am as guilty as anyone of consuming the planet's resources in an unsustainable way, including lots of travel and not all using just the wind! The big challenge I, and we as a company, have is working out how to continue to develop, evolve and do exciting and rewarding projects in a way which is much more sustainable.

On the boat, when you leave for a record, you take the absolute minimum with you. You manage what you have down to the last drop of fuel or water, and if you run out there is no way you can stop for more! At sea even money has absolutely no value, it's your resources that count. It's a very different world.

You are so careful never to leave the computer screens or the lights on. You know exactly how much diesel you need per day and you monitor your batteries and consumption as if they were the boat’s heart rate. This attention to detail, to avoidance of waste, to using every element of the resource available is definitely in my blood – I have to thank my parents for bringing me up to appreciate this – and I’ve definitely managed to put this to competitive advantage in the way it's helped me manage my race boats out on the ocean. The contrast of this with life on land in the Western world has made me think hard. There is a chasm of difference between the two. Investigating, and understanding this better has become a passion for me. To learn, to improve and to share this journey is my big goal for the coming years."

So what are you going to do about it and aren't you just jumping on the bandwagon?

"This attention to detail, to avoidance of waste, to using every element of the resource available is nothing new for me and is definitely in my blood. I was lucky that I grew up on a small holding where we grew our own vegetables, we had fruit on the trees around us, ducks and chickens in the yard outside and were fairly self sufficient in having land around us. We threw little away, were taught not to waste things, we bought in bulk to save money, and led, I would say, a fairly simple, sustainable life and one that I value immensely. I have to thank my parents for bringing me up to appreciate this – and I’ve definitely managed to put this way of thinking to competitive advantage in the way it’s helped me to manage resources on my raceboats out on the ocean.

Now I am becoming more and more aware of the increasing importance of living as sustainably as possible, I am trying to learn more and more about it and to make changes in both my personal and professional life where I can.

At home, I am researching into various types of renewable energy. In the office, we have recently conducted an energy survey and will be putting a number of suggestions into practice and for the boats, we are looking at biodiesel, the possible use of fuel cells and continuing our use of solar panel options.

As long ago as 1999, I crossed the Atlantic using biodiesel and 2 years ago, used a hydrogen fuel cell.
The more questions I ask, the more I realise that there is a lot of confusion about this whole area. I would like to try to unravel this and to find out the truth about what can be done practically to really make a difference. I am not just paying lip service to wanting to live a sustainable lifestyle, I want to learn, to improve and to share this journey to a more sustainable future with others.

This is one of my main goals and hopes for the coming years"

Audacity Of Hope

Obamas book 'Audacity Of Hope' takes a long time to get down to specifics. The first 50 pages say very little, mostly generalizations. I found it frustrating and dissapointing; but I suspect I'm not the target audience.

I can see it playing well to audiences in the USA, but outside it less so. He discusses the political origins of the USA and the constitution in some detail, but not the land grab from the Amerindians.

He speaks as though the only influence on the young USA was the democracy of ancient Greece, no mention of the French who backed them, it was the age of enlightenment. The French turned from monarchy to revolution and then dictatorship, it would have been an interesting contrast. No mention either that many of those founding fathers came from a British tradition of fairness and tolerance.

He asserts that Africa is so hide bound that people are not free to make choices. He writes of his relatives in Kenya whose lives seem controlled by either state or family.

It isn't written in a scholarly way and contains inaccuracies. It is done in a chatty friendly style, full of interesting stories about politics and campaigning. He is very tolerant of even George Bush, seeing the situation from his opponents shoes. I've often thought empathy was underrated, he turns it into an art form.

Even more interesting is his views on fundraising for campaigns. He seems to have discovered getting small donations from lots of people almost by accident. He doesnt suggest reducing the limits of donations, but relies on politicians being able to take money and remain balanced. Then he discussed how the influences are subtle.

On page 150 he talks up the luxuries of even the poorest USA citizens, which seems to ignore some sections of society. His own words on the failure of the USA health system puts other countries ahead of the USA in that respect. He also gives the impression that the Internet is owned by the USA, ignoring the role of Tim Berners-Lee.

You have to keep going till page 168 to find anything on renewable energy, there's very little on something on climate change. I would hope that he recognizes the role the USA has played on watering down Kyoto and reducing any action on this.

He has been president for 8 months now the change he promised is slow to materialise. Still he is a vast improvement on Bush, some similarities to Blair though. Clearly health is his priority, and its great that the 'star wars' system is gone. He seems to have made millions from his books, people are buying them in large numbers.

Open Letter To Gordon Brown On Trident

Photobucket

CND have sent an open letter to Gordon Brown.

Dear Gordon Brown,
Congratulations on your decision on three, not four, Trident replacement submarines.
But this is not enough. As long as Britain goes on telling the rest of the world that ‘security’ depends on nuclear weapons, other countries will want the same. Global insecurity will inevitably increase. The world needs negotiations aimed at the elimination of all nuclear weapons. This is not an option — it is a legal obligation.

The Cold War is over. Nuclear weapons make no sense — military gures call them useless. They are massively expensive. They are no protection against terrorists or the effects of climate change. And there is always the possibility of catastrophic accidents — there have been
many near misses.

I urge you to scrap Trident and cancel the replacement programme entirely and to spend the billions saved on the real needs of our people. You would thus give constructive meaning to the ‘special relationship’. President Obama needs our help to achieve his positive vision — a nuclear weapon-free world.

Yours sincerely,
Bruce Kent

Public opinion is shifting rapidly against the £76bn cost of Trident replacement - polls show that Tory voters are evenly split on the issue - something unthinkable until recently.

Kings Meadow Baths Success

2004 KMC

Campaigner Bob O'Neil says "The news is fantastic. Previously praised decision of Council for a hotel on KM has been rejected and they now want KMC to come out with a restoration for the community and will give us 2 years to come up with the goods/money."

WELL DONE EVERYONE!

The King’s Meadow Campaign wants the baths restored for swimming in summer and as a winter ice rink. kings meadow baths campaign

I have been campaigning on this since 2004, so its great news, after a long time. In those 5 years the listed building has not been looked after, rain has damaged the walls and rood, the signs of damage are there for all to see.

I have blogged on this before:
