PCC, Police and Crime Commissioner

THE Nottingham Green Party has released a statement that speaks for most Greens. They have attacked plans to bring in a police and crime commissioner for Notts later next month. The party has announced that they will not be putting forward a candidate for the election on November 15. A spokesman for the group said: "We believe that the creation of this role is an error of judgement by the coalition. It is bad for the police, bad for the community and bad for democracy. "The British police should be non-political. To put the control of the police into the hands of a single politician from a single political party, possibly elected from a very small turnout, creates enormous and obvious risks." He added: "We think it important that people do exercise their right to cast their vote. We believe that the role, if there must be one, is best filled by an independent candidate or person of independent mind who is committed to representing the whole community and to respecting the wisdom, knowledge and experience of senior police officers."
