Bike Week 2008

On the second Sunday of Bike Week (22 June) the Reading Cycle Campaign has organised a short family ride starting at Palmer Park Velodrome at 11am. The ride is aimed at families so will be mostly along towpaths and quite roads.

We are in great need of volunteers to act as stewards for the ride – basically this just means being an experienced rider who already knows the route to make sure participants don’t get lost.

We will be having a route reconnaissance ride on Friday 13th June starting at 7pm outside Palmer Park velodrome and finishing with a drink at the Fisherman’s Cottage on Kennetside. If you could help us by being a steward for the family ride please e-mail us on rbc@readingcyclecampaign.org.uk.

Alternatively just turn up for the practice ride on the 13th June. If you would like to help but can’t make the practice ride then let us know and we will email you a map of the route.

Bike Week Family Cycle Challenge
One of the main events for Bike Week is a family competition, where families can win a £500 voucher to Centre Parks sponsored by the Oracle Corporation, a Nokia phone or CTC goodie bags.

The aim of the competition is to get families to clock up as many minutes as they can on their bikes in a week. The exact minutes are tracked by attaching cycle computers, which are available for free from Reading's Cycle Champion project, to wheels of your bike.

The competition is open to all members of the family of any age and will conclude with a big family cycle ride on Sunday, June 22nd, lead by Reading Cycle Campaign, starting and finishing at Palmer Park.

Families can register and pick up their free pedometer at four venues across the Borough; The Lodge, Palmer Park on the Wokingham Road, Prospect Park Pavilion, Academy Sport Centre, Northumberland Avenue and Rivermead Leisure Complex in Richfield Avenue.

A friend of mine just pointed out that paths which are inaccessible to cyclists are also inaccessible to wheelchair users. Hmm.

Very good point. There must be a way of dissuading motorbikes without banning trikes and wheelchair users.

Also, I celebrated bike week by fitting my cyclometer to the trike, triking into town with both children, catching a front wheel in a seam in the road by the Town Hall, and turning the damn thing on its side. The children are fine and I'm on crutches. However, it's possible to cycle the trike one-legged in low gears, so the Velodrome is still a possibility, though the competition is obviously not...
